crab of the month
japanese spider crab
did you know?
The Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) is a species of marine crab that lives in the waters around Japan. It has the largest leg span of any arthropod, reaching up to 3.7 metres (12.1 ft) from claw to claw. Japanese spider crabs are mostly found off the southern coasts of the Japanese island of Honshū, from Tokyo Bay to Kagoshima Prefecture.
additional crabs
horseshoe crab
Horseshoe crabs are marine and brackish water arthropods. Their popular name is a misnomer, as they are not true crabs, nor even crustaceans, as crabs are, but a different order of arthropod.
king crab
Here is a white person holding a king crab. Because of their large size and the taste of their meat, many species are widely caught and sold as food (king crabs, not white people!!).
fiddler crab
Look at this lil guy! This fiddler crab is most well known for its sexually dimorphic claws; the males' major claw is much larger than the minor claw, while the females' claws are both the same size.
crabs in media
You might recognize this character as Mr. Krabs, from the popular children's show Spongebob Squarepants. Unfortunately, Mr. Krabs reinforces the negative stereotype that all crabs are frugal and obsessed with money :(
